Trump Called It a 'Very Heavy Attack.' Gold Went Up Because He Said It'd Be Quick.
18 dead in new US strikes on Iran, Trump floating another attack 'anytime we want' — and gold rose anyway, on nothing more than a promise it won't last long.
At least 18 people are dead in Iran, including a 4-year-old killed when a strike hit a wedding party in Kuhestak. President Trump says he’s “prepared to do another one anytime we want.” And gold went up this morning.
Not despite the escalation. Because of one sentence in it. Trump told reporters he didn’t think the renewed fighting would go on “too long,” and that alone was enough to send gold futures up 0.5% and silver up 1.1% at the open. Two days ago this site pointed out that gold fell on a week of record oil flow through Hormuz and a fresh round of US strikes. Now the war got bloodier and the metal rallied. Same conflict, opposite reaction, and the common thread is that neither move had anything to do with the actual body count.
The Attack Was Real. The Rally Was a Guess.
Al Jazeera reports at least 18 killed and 108 wounded in the latest US strikes on Iran’s southern coast, in a war that started in February. Trump’s own words: “It was a very heavy attack last night. And we’re prepared to do another one. And anytime we want.” That is not the language of someone signaling de-escalation. It’s a man telling you he has more inventory.
Yet gold’s December futures opened at $4,436.40 Thursday, up 0.5% from Wednesday’s close, and were trading at $4,470.70 by 6:53 a.m. ET. Silver opened at $66.17, up 1.1%, and held near $66.21 by mid-morning. Traders read “won’t take too long” as a ceiling on the conflict. They priced that read into the metal before the ink on the death toll was even dry. Brent crude, meanwhile, sat above $97 a barrel — a live shooting war over the world’s most important oil chokepoint, priced in whether or not the attack turns out to be short-lived.
Zoom Out and the Week Still Looks Rough
One quiet morning doesn’t erase what happened this week. Gold is still down 3.8% from a week ago even after today’s bounce, and silver is down 4.7% over the same stretch. Both are up sharply on the month — gold 8.6%, silver 14.7% — and both are still running far above where they sat a year ago, gold up 24.8% and silver up 60.8%. The one-day pop is a rounding error sitting on top of a much bigger move that had already happened before Trump said a word this morning.
What This Means for Stackers
You just watched gold and silver move in opposite directions on the same war within 48 hours, and both moves were driven by a sentence, not a fact on the ground. That’s the tell: short-term price action here is trading on what one man says about how long a war will last, not on the war itself, not on the mine, not on the vault. If you’re timing purchases around headlines out of Tehran or Washington, you’re trying to out-guess a market that’s already proven it can’t agree with itself two days in a row. The year-over-year numbers — up nearly a quarter for gold, up 60% for silver — are still the only numbers here that describe your actual position. Keep buying on schedule and let the daily whiplash be someone else’s problem.
