Producer Prices Cooled to 4.7%. Gold and Silver Fell Anyway.
July PPI came in flat, missing forecasts, and the annual rate dropped to 4.7% from 5.5%. Gold and silver sold off on the news anyway.
July’s Producer Price Index came in flat — 0.0% month-over-month, against a forecast for a 0.2% rebound. The annual rate dropped to 4.7%, down from 5.5% in June. That’s a genuinely soft inflation print, the second one this week after Wednesday’s in-line CPI. And gold fell anyway, sliding roughly 0.75% to $4,434.10 during the report window.
Yesterday, boring inflation data was bullish. Today, better-than-boring inflation data was bearish. If that sequence bothers you, good — it should. It’s the clearest lesson this week in why chasing daily headlines is a losing game for anyone buying on a schedule.
What’s Actually Happening
Under the hood, the PPI report was a split decision. Services prices rose 0.2%. Goods prices fell 0.7%, doing the heavy lifting that kept the headline number flat. That’s not a uniformly cooling economy — it’s cheaper goods offsetting stickier services, which is a different story than “inflation is dead,” even if the topline number reads that way.
Silver got hit harder than gold. It opened Thursday at $65.46, already down 0.4% from Wednesday’s close, and kept sliding to $64.48 by mid-morning — a 1.30% drop. The gold-silver ratio, which measures how many ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold, widened from 67.49 to 67.88. When that ratio climbs, it means silver is underperforming gold, and today it underperformed on a day when the data should have helped both metals.
Here’s the mechanical explanation for why “good” data produced a selloff: markets had already priced in a Fed hold after Wednesday’s CPI. Going into Thursday, the case for the Fed skipping a September hike was already built. A PPI print that merely confirmed the trend didn’t add new information — it just closed out a trade that had already happened. That’s the “buy the rumor, sell the news” pattern, and it’s exactly what played out here in miniature.
The Detail Nobody’s Talking About
Buried in the PPI release itself is the more interesting flag: the report noted that sharp oil price increases toward the end of July were probably not captured, because most of the data collection happens earlier in the month. That matters because oil has been climbing on geopolitical risk tied to shipping disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz — the same story driving gold’s safe-haven bid all month.
In other words, the “cooling” PPI print has a built-in blind spot. It’s measuring a version of July that ended before the month’s real inflation risk showed up. If oil stays elevated into August, that pressure shows up in next month’s PPI, not this one. Markets that understand this aren’t popping champagne over a flat print — they’re bracing for the number that measures the second half of the month, and that’s a plausible reason today’s rally never showed up.
Zoom out and the bigger trend hasn’t changed. Gold is still up 33% year-over-year and 9.5% over the past month. Silver is still up 70.2% year-over-year, even after cooling from a 173.3% annual gain back in May. One flat print, in either direction, doesn’t rewrite either of those trajectories.
The Bottom Line
Two inflation reports, two opposite market reactions, same underlying message: don’t trade your stacking schedule around a single data release. Wednesday’s in-line CPI removed a fear. Thursday’s flat PPI confirmed a trend the market had already traded. Neither one changes the macro backdrop — a Fed leaning toward a hold, an oil market with an unresolved geopolitical risk premium, and metals still up double digits over the past year. Keep buying on your schedule. The headline of the day is noise; the direction of the year is the signal.
