The 10-Year Pays 5.27%. Gold Pays Nothing and Is Still Above $4,100.

The 10-year Treasury yields about 5.27%. Gold yields nothing. Gold is still at $4,175.

That is the whole puzzle of this market, and on Tuesday morning Kitco had spot gold up 0.86% and silver at $61.47, as long-dated yields eased from Monday’s multi-decade highs.

The Case Against Gold Is Strong

I’ll give the bears their due. A 30-year yield of 5.63% is a real alternative to a metal that sits in a safe. The Fed is not helping: Kitco reports a 78% probability of no change at the October 28 meeting, and a “high probability” of at least one more hike in December.

The data isn’t pointing the other way. The ISM services index came in at 54.9 for September. Its prices index hit 74.0, the highest since July 2022. Payrolls added 29,000 jobs, with 60,000 of downward revisions to July and August.

Weak jobs, hot prices, rising rates. That’s a miserable mix for anything that doesn’t pay you.

Fortune’s price check shows what it has done to the price. Gold was $4,153 on Monday morning, down $65 from October 2 and down $218 from a month ago. Silver was $61.80, versus $66.21 a month ago.

The Room Full of Bullion People Disagrees

At the LBMA conference, the argument was that yields aren’t the main story. Vikram Dhawan of Nippon India Mutual Fund said gold may be signaling that “the supply of paper may probably overwhelm the demand.” He sees “visibility of higher fiscal debt,” but none of fiscal discipline.

Shayne McGuire of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas said people are focused on the idea that “the value of money is going to decline” as debt worries grow. And on China, Wei Yan of Dymon Asia said investors “just keep buying the dip.”

Note where they’re talking. It’s a bullion conference, not a neutral jury. I’d discount the conviction and keep the question: why hasn’t gold fallen further with yields at these levels?

Where I Land

Both stories can be true. Gold is down on the month because rates are up. It still holds above $4,100 because some very large buyers think the debt problem is real. Neither side has won.

Here’s what I’d watch. If yields ease and gold doesn’t bounce, the bears are right about more than rates. If yields stay high and gold holds, the debt crowd has a point.

The Bottom Line

Nothing here changes the math of a monthly stack. Spot is $4,175, silver is $61, and the next real catalyst is the October 28 Fed meeting. Know the date. Keep your schedule.
